Acting on evidence – Adalat® strengthens the role of CCBs in cardiovascular disease

Calcium channel blockers (CCBs) are undergoing a revival in the hypertension and cardiovascular disease management arenas, and Adalat® GITS is at the forefront of this, strongly supported by the positive data from ACTION. This was the overriding message from the first of this year's Adalat® Expert Workshops that took place on 8 April, in Brussels, Belgium.

The highly interactive programme was delivered by an eminent faculty, who, in the first session, presented the evidence for the changing face of current antihypertensive therapy. They highlighted the weaknesses of some of the older drug classes, such as beta blockers, and stressed the need for combined drug strategies, with a focus on benefits for the rapidly increasing metabolic-syndrome population. The experts summarised the wealth of positive data for Adalat® GITS,, including some of the most recent findings from ACTION, and the support from other CCB trials – highlighting the benefits of Adalat® GITS in managing cardiovascular disease (CVD) through anti-anginal, antihypertensive and vascular-protective effects.

The first session laid the foundations for the group work, in which delegates from 14 countries put clinical data into practice, using real patient case studies. Hermann Haller (left) and Henry Elliott (below) were outstanding in their roles as chairpersons, engaging the faculty and the audience in the breakout discussions and presentations.

This highly interactive forum challenged the physicians and compared clinical practices across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Canada and Japan. By applying the knowledge gained from the formal presentations, the physicians were able to identify ways to improve patient management, including an important role for Adalat® GITS.
