Hypertension, along with smoking and an elevated serum cholesterol level, is an important cardiovascular risk factor and has a major impact on cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality and the development of end-stage renal disease.
Adalat® (nifedipine GITS) is effective, has an excellent safety profile, and is ideally suited for long-term hypertension management.
Data from clinical studies such as INSIGHT,1 ENCORE2 and ACTION,3 have established Adalat® as an effective first-line therapy with disease-modifying activity.
The efficacy of nifedipine GITS – the long-acting formulation of Adalat® – in hypertension was demonstrated with the results of INSIGHT.2 Adalat® reduced blood pressure from 173/99mmHg at baseline to 138/82mmHg after 4.5 years. Not only were these reductions equivalent to those achieved with a diuretic combination in INSIGHT, but were also better than the blood pressure reductions achieved with other antihypertensive agents in comparable clinical trials. Both diastolic and systolic blood pressure reductions persisted throughout the 24-hour period between drug administrations.
Therefore, Adalat® is an ideal agent for targeting the unmet need of better long-term hypertension management.
