Brand Journey

1964

Construction plans

“Highly specific verapamil/nifedipine/diltiazem-type calcium channel blockers have opened up completely new perspectives in therapy and research.”

“Their great therapeutic potential is ultimately based on the same fundamental mechanisms of action.”

“Dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers have the strongest vasodilatory effects; for example, in the treatment of arterial hypertension.”

A. Fleckenstein
Professor of Physiology
Discoverer of calcium channel blockers

1966

Port of registration

Following research by Dr Bossert and Dr Vater, nifedipine enters Bayer as ‘BAYa 1040’.

Dr F. Bossert
Bayer chemist

Dr W. Vater
Bayer pharmacologist

1975

Naming of the ship

Launch of Adalat® in Germany as a cardioprotective coronary therapeutic agent for the management of angina

Setting sail

The launch of Adalat® was driven by a strong communications programme.
Slogans: “There is only one Adalat®” and “The challenge to your coronary therapy”

1979

Jollyboat

Adalat® 5mg – the brand expands

1980

New Worlds

Adalat® was introduced in the USA.

1981

New Target
A longer-acting formulation is developed as Adalat® Retard and is indicated for the management of essential hypertension and angina.

1984

Extension of the fleet
Additions to the clinical range with Sali Adalat®, Adalat® intra-coronary, Adalat® i.v. and Adalat® 20.

1985

New loadings
Maturity date of patent. Bayer responded by developing Tredalat®, Adalat® SL and Adalat® T10.

1990

Anchor in the storm

INTACT: INTACT results, published in The Lancet, showed that, in patients with mild CAD, Adalat® slows cardiovascular disease progression – evaluated by the detection of new atherosclerotic lesions.

Lichtlen PR, et al. Lancet 1990;335:1109–13.

1991

Stay on target for 24 hours

Adalat® OROS/GITS once-daily is developed. The unique galenic formulation of Adalat® OROS/GITS remains unsurpassed. From both convenience and safety profile perspectives, the new Adalat® OROS/GITS formulation improves the effectiveness of Adalat®. Take a short look at how Adalat® OROS/GITS passes through the digestive tract and ensures constant plasma nifedipine levels over 24 hours.

2000

Land IN SIGHT

Advanced protection from cardiovascular (CV) events – Adalat® GITS saves lives. With a CV risk reduction of 50%, INSIGHT showed that Adalat® GITS is as effective as a diuretic combination in reducing blood pressure and CV risk. The study demonstrated that Adalat® GITS preserves renal function and prevents the development of diabetes and atherosclerotic vessel damage. Further results of INSIGHT suggest that Adalat® GITS slows the progression of atherosclerosis by reducing coronary calcification and intima-media thickening.

Brown MJ, et al. Lancet 2000;356:366–72.

2001

A fresh breeze of success

ENCORE demonstrated that Adalat® GITS treatment significantly improved endothelial function, even in the most constricting coronary artery segment. This supports the hypothesis that Adalat® GITS treatment benefits the vascular system, as indicated by the INSIGHT side-arm study results.

ENCORE Investigators. Circulation 2003;107:422–8.

2004

Full speed ahead

ACTION
Adalat® GITS administered in addition to best-practice therapy for coronary artery disease

The ACTION primary analysis revealed an impressive 11% overall risk reduction in cardiovascular events and procedures.1
The Hypertension subgroup analysis showed that Adalat® GITS has even greater benefits in patients with hypertension at baseline:2
·    13% risk reduction in cardiovascular mortality and events
·    38% reduction in the incidence of new overt heart failure
·    33% reduction in the incidence of debilitating stroke i

Future
Future ahoy

30 years of Adalat® – 30 years of experience, effectiveness and safety. The course was never easy, but quality of research allowed new territories to be conquered. Today, Adalat® has a strong position and is relied on by millions of doctors and patients. To maintain this position, we continue our research and investment, so you can remain on track to the future.

Further ACTION study subanalyses investigating risk management,1 safety,2 atrial fibrillation,3 coronary calcification,4 heart failure,5 systolic blood pressure6 and healthcare utlisation7 emphasise the benefits of Adalat® for patients with coronary heart disease, angina pectoris and hypertension.
