In November 2003, 55 international scientific experts assembled for an Expert Workshop in Albufeira, Portugal.
Reduction of overall cardiovascular risk and provision of end-organ protection are major treatment targets. Therefore, the main discussion topics of the workshop, which was chaired by Professor Philip Poole-Wilson and Professor Giuseppe Mancia, focused on current insights into cardiovascular disease development. Furthermore, the roles of adequate blood-pressure reduction, as well as preserving endothelial function, with drug treatment were discussed comprehensively. Many contributions were related to the outcomes of the ACTION study, which will provide extensive data on the management of cardiovascular disease with Adalat® (nifedipine GITS). The ACTION results will be presented at the ESC in Munich in August 2004.
