Bayer Schering Pharma presented two outstanding satellite symposia to capacity audiences on the opening day of the 17th European Society of Hypertension (ESH) European Meeting on Hypertension, Milan, Italy. Guidelines, their implications, and new clinical evidence - an expanded role for CCBs? provided an excellent forum to showcase Adalat as an antihypertensive agent that provides benefits on multiple levels, with an audience of approximately 250 attentive delegates. Chaired by Professor Giuseppe Mancia, Italy, and Professor Hermann Haller, Germany, the programme highlighted key aspects of the new ESH guidelines, ahead of their official launch, that are clearly addressed by Adalat - namely, the importance of achieving and sustaining target blood pressure safely and effectively as early as possible. Importantly, the symposium also provided a sneak preview of the new combination therapy study TALENT (A Multicentre Study Evaluating Efficacy of Nifedipine GITS - Telmisartan Combination in Blood Pressure Control and Beyond: Comparison of Two Treatment Strategies). This study supports the new guideline recommendations - to initiate first-line combination therapy in high-risk patients to optimise BP control.
Professor Luis Ruilope, Spain, focused his attention on guideline recommendations to target high-risk patients with tailored therapy and described Adalat as “an excellent single agent able to be uptitrated or added to other agents as a low-dose combination”. There are strong data to support outcome benefits of a calcium channel blocker (CCB)-based combined strategy, and Dr. Peter Meredith, UK, used the data from ACTION and ASCOT to highlight this. Professor Franz Messerli, US, described the use of CCBs as “no-brainer antihypertensive agents” that have clear benefits when used in combination compared with monotherapy. He speculated that the combined use of Adalat and Pritor will have synergistic effects in BP-lowering, counteracting potential side-effects and providing additional protection against long-term target organ damage and cardiovascular events.
Drawing crowds of delegates seemed to be a theme for Bayer Schering Pharma - the exhibition booth, with its open and inviting layout, attracted a constant stream of traffic. Animated booth panels, video loops on overhead screens and computer stations with interactive e-learnings challenged and engaged the physicians.
