The symposium entitled ‘Cardiovascular Risk Management from Prevention to Treatment’ was held on August 30, and boasted a faculty of 11 international experts from across the globe.

The main objectives of this meeting were to remind the audience that the global burden of cardiovascular disease is increasing, and the medical community can play a key role in identifying patients at risk and in implementing appropriate prevention strategies. Stratifying patients according to blood pressure levels and the presence of other cardiovascular risks such as metabolic syndrome, IGT and diabetes, can help physicians utilise treatments accordingly.
An overview of nifedipine GITS (Adalat®), acarbose (Glucobay), telmisartan (Pritor/Kinzal) and low-dose aspirin (Aspirin Cardio) was given in this setting of cardiovascular risk management. Professor Ruilope (Spain) concluded the session by adding that nifedipine GITS lowers blood pressure and significantly reduces stroke, CHF, angina, diabetes and the need for surgical procedures; acarbose reduces the incidence of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and primary prevention with aspirin can reduce the incidence of cardiovascular death, MI, and stroke. Telmisartan was highlighted as the ‘drug of choice’ in hypertensive patients with the metabolic syndrome. All presenters were well received, and there were around 400 attendees at the start of the meeting.
