Adalat® GITS

Controlled release for 24-hour blood pressure control

Adalat® GITS is a highly sophisticated formulation of nifedipine, and is markedly superior to generic nifedipine formulations. Large-scale, randomised, clinical trials such as INSIGHT and ACTION, which have been conducted with Adalat® (nifedipine GITS), demonstrate that this formulation provides a controlled onset of action and has a significant lower incidence of side effects compared with the short-acting formulations. Due to the special GITS formulation, "smooth" 24-hour blood-pressure control is achieved with once-daily dosing, which improves patient compliance.
GITS is the acronym for "Gastro-Intestinal Therapeutic System". Every Adalat® GITS tablet consists of a drug reservoir surrounded by a semi-permeable membrane, which has a single precision-laser-drilled pore on the drug reservoir side.
When Adalat® GITS enters the gastrointestinal tract, the tablet begins to absorb water and a nifedipine suspension forms in the drug reservoir. The increasing osmotic pressure then pushes this suspension through the precision pore at a constant rate for 24 hours.

Adalat® GITS is a technologically advanced therapeutic system

The resulting effect is a constant plasma level of nifedipine, thereby avoiding an unwanted increase in heart rate, which is a problem with short-acting nifedipine formulations.
